IndyCar Announces 17-Race season for 2022, beginning in February

IndyCar announced 2022’s race schedule Sunday before the day’s Firestone Grand Prix of Monterey, revealing a retooled program featuring 17 races beginning in St. Petersburg in February.

“This schedule continues to build on the growth and momentum the NTT Data IndyCar Series has achieved, especially in 2021,” Mark Miles, chief executive of Penske Entertainment Corp., said Sunday.

“Our terrific partnership with NBC Sports has led to a fantastic opportunity to place an unparalleled 14 events on broadcast television while completing the rest on USA Network and Peacock.”

The 14 figure is one more than IndyCar had previously announced in July.

In 2022, Iowa will become the solo double-header event on the schedule. Detroit’s race at Bell Isle will resume its normal position on the schedule the week after the 500, but will be run as a single race for the first time since 2012.

St. Petersburg will assume a new spot on the schedule as the season opener, Texas Motor Speedway will host round two, and similarly to Bell Isle, will be run as a single-race event. Long Beach will also return to its normal position on the calendar in April and Laguna Seca will once again play host for the series finale as in 2019.

“Our summer schedule also is full of action, with no extended breaks in the calendar, leading into the crowning of a new champion on the west coast,” Miles added. “This is an excellent schedule for the 2022 NTT Data IndyCar Series.”
